Using the Computer to Improve Your Writing
Composing | Revising

You already know that the computer makes a good typewriter, letting you easily type in text, shift it around, and make small proofreading changes. It can also do much more for you if you make the most of its capacities. It has some disadvantages too, though -- for instance, you can see only half a page of your work at a time. Here are some practical tips on making the most of the computer and minimizing its limitations. Use the Help key in your word-processing program to learn more about the functions mentioned here.

Composing

If you use word processing only for typing final drafts, you may be surprised how much power you gain by doing all your writing on the computer. Try it!
    1. You don't have to create clean or fully developed text the first time. Try jotting down your ideas as they come, without looking up spelling or other details -- just make a note or a few XXXs or //// in the text to mark the place to return. You will be able to create a full draft quickly--then you can go back and strengthen it. Using a word processor means you never have to recopy!
    2. Try doing brainstorming on screen. It's encouraging to scroll through your results later and develop worthwhile bits. For real writer's block, turn the monitor brightness to zero and type in anything at all on a darkened screen: you'll probably be surprised at how much sense these seemingly random sequences make.
    3. Outlining is easier on computer. If you like working out your logic first, type in your initial ideas in outline form. Many word-processing programs include built-in outliners (use Help or your manual to find out). Even a simple list of points to cover helps get you started. Then you can fill in as much as you want in each draft. The computer also lets you check the logical strucure of a completed draft: either use the built-in outliner function or just copy the opening sentence of each paragraph into a sequence and look at the set to see if it shows the structure you want.
    4. A simple idea: don't double-space your text until you're ready to print it out. You need to see as many lines as possible on screen to get a sense of the flow of your work.
    5. Save time by using short forms in your first draft. Then get the Search and Replace function (Alt-F2 in WordPerfect 5.1) to insert full wordings. Type s-a at first, for instance; then replace that set of letters with sovereignty-association.

Revising

Word processing comes into its own with the real work of good writing--cutting, arranging, rewriting. Get to know what your computer can and can't do to support you. (Visit the University of Victoria's link on revising for a good discussion of the principles of effective revision.)
    1. Don't be deceived by the orderly look of text on the screen. Print out your paper several times in order to look at it as a whole. Be sure you read it through critically, comparing sections and checking overall flow and logic, just as its eventual reader will.
    2. This kind of checking may make you want to restructure your essay completely. Luckily, the computer makes that easy with its cut-and-paste functions. If you're uncertain about where a piece should go, try copying rather than moving; then you can choose.
    3. You can combine versions easily too. Windows and Mac HyperCard let you see a number of documents at once; even less advanced programs let you see two at once (Ctrl-F3 in WordPerfect 5.1). Then you can copy from one to another.
    4. To go quickly to a specific passage in your draft, use the Search function of any word processor. Type in a few words you remember using and ask the computer to find them -- quicker than scrolling through.
    5. Documentation is less trouble to do well. Footnotes or endnotes take only a few keystrokes (Ctrl-F7 in WordPerfect 5.1). Parenthetical citations are easy to check and complete. There are ways also to create a Bibliography or Index as you go.
    6. Do use a spell checker as a final touch to your editing. They catch not only spelling errors but also typos. If spell check flags a word as wrong when you are sure it isn't (this happens with names and technical words), then add that word to your "personal dictionary" so the computer recognizes it next time. Keep in mind, though, that the computer won't tell you that you've mistyped form for from, much less that you've misused principle for principal.
    7. So don't throw out your print dictionary just yet. You will have to look up the occasional words that spell checkers don't recognize; and of course you still need it to check meaning and usage. With a computer thesaurus you still need to look up meanings and usage for the words it suggests. Don't accept suggestions blindly. (If you don't want to leave your computer, there are some handy on-line dictionaries. Visit our link to Online Writing Reference Tools.)
    8. Style checkers such as Grammatik and CorrectGrammar, built into recent versions of Microsoft Word and WordPerfect, may help you overcome bad habits such as overusing jargon or the passive voice. Don't count on these programs, however, to clear up all your problems with sentence structure or word choice. They catch only a few kinds of grammar errors, and they sometimes mistakenly flag good sentences. If you do use a style checker, read the onscreen comments: knowing why something is wrong is more valuable to you than just having it corrected once. Warning: Don't accept the automatic correct features of recent versions. They can make your text into nonsense.
    9. You can do your own style checking by making the most of the simple Search function. For instance, if you know you have overused or misused a certain word or phrase, let Search call up each instance and then you can look at it in context. This can even work with types of words: try searching ion[space] or ment[space] to notice how many abstract words you have been using. Even looking at each use of and[space], but, or which can show up some habits of sentence structuring.
    10. If you hit a tough sentence to revise, give yourself lots of screen space to try out new versions. Do a hard-page return and use the rest of the screen to play around with your ideas. It can sometimes help to make a list or other visual structure -- use Enter and Tab as much as you like until you see the innate shape of your ideas. In WordPerfect, RevealCodes lets you get rid of the formating when you want.

How to play Samulnori.
Samulnori is from farmer's and Buddhist’s music which was played on the
four main musical instruments. The word "Samul" means the four instruments
Kkwaenggari, Janggu, Buk, and Jing. The Buk and Janggu, fabricated of
leather, make the sounds of Earth, and Kkwaenggari and Jing, fabricated of
metal, make the sounds of Heaven. Therefore the sounds of the instruments,
between Heaven and Earth, are harmonized and create one sound made by all
of God’s creatures. By this ideology, most people think that the samulnori
is hard to learn and to play. But, if you follow my essay it is much
easier than you think.

First of all, it is easy to play Kkwaenggari, sit down and make your legs
crossed. When a left hand holds gong, grasp a stick with a right hand. To
hold the Kkwaenggari  spread out your fingers inside of a gong and hold
it with your thumb and first finger only. Lift a gong as high as your
chest, hit the gong with a stick in your right hand. Be carefull, you
must hit the 2 o'clock zone of a gong, and also the side of it.

Second, it doesn’t need(TAKE) much time to learn Janggu, sit down and put
it in front of you. In your right hand hold a Goongche, a stick which has
a small ball at the end, by make the thumb and first finger's circle, and
put the stick inside of the circl.(SP) The right hand has a Yealche which
looks like a simple stick. Hit the center of the leather. The important
thing is making your arm straight, do not fold(BEND) it!

Third, it’s a piece of cake to play Buk, sit down with a left foot parted
from the body to put it on the left sole of the foot. Straight(EN YOUR)
left arm and grasp the top of a drum and there will be a knot. When
a(YOUR) left hand holds the Buk, a(YOUR) right hand holds a stick that
looks like a bat. Be sure to use your shoulder when hitting the center of
a leather, not your wrist.

Fourth, it’s not difficult to play a Jing put the holder and a Jing with
your left in front of you. You don't need to hold it, but you need to
stay in position at every hit with your left palm. Hold the middle of a
stick with a(YOUR) right hand and hit the center of a(THE) Jing. The
importance thing is not making sounds but counting rhythms. Calm down;
try to hear all of other’s sounds

This is all about how to play these instruments. It’s a percussion
instrument so it is easy to learn and easy to play.

THIS IS A GOOD ESSAY. IN READING IT I THINK THAT I COULD LEARN HOW TO PLAY
THE INSTRUMENTS. NOTICE THE 'YOUR' AND 'THE' CORRECTIONS IN THE TEXT.
THERE ARE MORE PLACES WHERE YOU MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE, THIS WONT AFFECT
YOUR MARK, I JUST THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. THE ONLY PROBLEM HERE IS
THE COMPLETE ABSENCE OF SIGNAL WORDS. EACH OF YOUR BODY PARAGRAPHS
(2,3,4,5) SHOULD HAVE SIGNAL WORDS INSIDE OF IT. OVERALL, GOOD JOB, WELL
EDITED. BUT, I HAVE JUST NOTICED THAT MY EXAMPLE 'SIMPLE PARAGRAPH' DOES
NOT INCLUDE THEM EITHER, SO I WILL NOT TAKE ANY MARKS AWAY.

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation

APEC is an organization for international cooperation between Asia-Pacific countries. It was suggested by the Australia Prime Minister in 1989. In the same year, Korea, America, Japan, Australia, New-Zealand, Canada and 6 more ASEAN Countries met in Canberra, Australia, to officially establish the association. In 2003, APEC accepted China, Russia, Vietnam and Peru as members. Therefore there are 21 members in APEC.  APEC??s main purposes are cooperation in the areas of economics and technology and finding a solution for international economic imbalances. A distinction is that all APEC members are equal.  They made this treaty in OSAKA Acting-rule at 1995.

However in the real world, there are gaps between developed countries and developing countries. Developed countries want free trade and investment for open markets and developing countries want assistance in developing their country??s economy and technology. After this meeting, we Korea has had many advantages. There was an investment fair. In this fair we made 46 contracts worth seven hundred million dollars. Also in a Korea-Russia ministers?? meeting we asked for and received permission to fish in Russian territorial waters. The government has said that with these contracts and other activities the total income will reach four hundred and seventy billion dollars.

However, there is a dark side. According to open market trade, we have to remove import restrictions for agriculture products such as rice. This will cause the collapse of Korean agriculture. As we know, Korean rice is expensive. If the price of rice is reduced by half or even more, which policy would you choose? For this reason, our rice industry is loosing in price competitiveness. Finally, farmers will give up farming. Also, if we have no choice except to import rice, then rice export countries will use rice as a weapon by costing up

Last week we studied about stem cell according to Dr. Hwong and Harvard teams' research. We discussed about these two teams' differences and our opinion.  The dictionary said a stem cell is a type of cell that can produce other cells which are able to develop into any kind of cell in the body. This cell is known for a key to solve uncured diseases, so it is getting popular nowadays. There are two famous teams that studied stem cell one is a Harvard team and the other is a Korean Hwong's team.

An embryo stem cell which Hwong??s team studied is called as a multi useable cell because it can develop all kind of human being's organs; heart, blood, etc. In fact, an embryo stem cell could make immune rejection problems when we forcefully inject cells to patients. Therefore, Mr. Hwong combined patients' own somatic cell and women's egg to get a compatible embryo stem cell. Finally, it works without any immune rejection problems. That??s why it has brought national wide attention. Even though he solved rejection problems, it has brought ethical problem due to the women's egg because each woman's egg means human being. However, there is a remarkable result from Harvard team's research. They studied about a hybrid cell. It combined an embryo stem cell and adult's skin cell to get a new embryo stem cell. If this research makes progress, we could have a compatible embryo stem cell without using women's eggs. Also it means it could reduce ethical problems. But there is one big problem; even if it makes us free from ethical problems, an adult skin cell already has a human's genetic pattern. So, it will not be one hundred percent perfectly compatible to every patient. So, we have found out that there are two differences between each team??s research.  Hwong??s team can't solve the ethical problem, but they solved the perfect compatibility problem. On the other hand, Harvard team can't solve this compatibility problem hundred percent, but they solved ethical problem.

Here is our group's conclusion about these two teams' research according to an ethical view. The main points of today??s subject are the ethical problem and immune rejection problem. The best way is for the Harvard team to make remarkable progress. But if not, there is one question to ask ourselves. Do you think an embryo stem cell is a human being who has a living right or is it just a cell in a beaker? To solve this question, we have to make a standard for the time life begins. In our group's discussion, we have decided that a fertilized cell is a human being, so Hwong??s research is ethically alright, because he is using non-fertilized cells. According to this conclusion, we think, so far, that Hwong??s research is useful and better than Harvard team??s. However, we can't ignore other nation's ideas and criticism from religions. We hope that both Hwong and Harvard team take a step forward continually. Finally, we will be able to reach a better and helpful result without ethical criticism.

My role model

from English/작문 2005/09/28 20:03
There was no one who I respected and who I wanted to be like, except my parent, before the University. However, when I joined a club in University, I found a senior who became my role model in my life. His name is Lim Hun Jung. He is a student association president of my English department now, and also a samulnori leader of my club "AULSORI" in 2000.  (Aulsori is a Hannam university's main club of Samulnori.)

I had a strong interest in Korean traditional music "Samulnori" in High school.  Therefore, I joined the Club "Aulsori" just after entering the University. I met him first in this club, after that I saw him in a English department. He really does his best both for his club and department. I think, he knows how to express his passion and desire for whatever he likes. He said, he learned not playing an instrument but expressing passion in samulnori club. Frankly he said, he was not a good player of samulnori in 1999 when he was a freshman. He wanted to be a good player, so he practiced everyday with passion and desire. Finally, he became a leader of samulnori in 2000.

At the same time, I played a JANGGOO in his club. I also have desire to be a good player. However, I think I need more passion like him and this is what I want to learn from him. So, I chose him as a my role model in life. He has already finished same club and English department activities successfully, as I have to do in my last years of university life.  If I follow his way and learn what he learned in his previous club and department life, I will have great pleasures in my life.

Before closing my article, This Friday we have a special concert for all of Hannam students. This is an annual concert, so we practice hard and do our best to make a great concert. I welcome all of you to our concert and you will be able to see a person who I have introduced in my article "Lim Hun Jung".

Dear Mr. Kim:

This morning I saw an article in a newspaper. In that message there is a position in the marketing department for expanding your market to the west. I believe my enclosed resume suggests some ways I can be of value to your company.

As you know, to expand your business to western country, you will need a skillful English speaker. And to explain products to a buyer this person also needs to have computer knowledge.
I believe, I am the person who you looking for and this is the job I am looking for. I am studying English as a main major and Computer science as a second major to enter a foreign computer company. Even nowadays, many people can speak English and many people can handle a computer but most of people cannot do both of these jobs.  For this reason, I could help your company.

If you consider that my qualifications and experience are suitable, please call me or send an E-mail. Also, it may not be enough to show all of my ability and character by letter. So I??d like to have an interview any time you want.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Lee:

First of all, I??m really thankful for your consideration of our University. After you became president. many things have changed and I??m satisfied with what you??ve done. I have one more suggestion.

Nowadays, many students study to become a government officer and a teacher. As you know, the examinations for these jobs are very hard to pass. So we try to get more information and knowledge about the test. The best known way is an institution in Seoul. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible if we are students and have a class during the day in Taejeon. So the alternative is an internet lecture. I know that most students enrolled for at least one cyber lecture. It will be more than 50% of Hannam students.

Here is my deal, why doesn??t the school make a treaty with an external cyber lecture company? If our students enroll for that company??s lecture, then they would offer some discount. That will be good for us and good for the company. Woosong University is already using that system and it??s very good and useful.

Please consider my thought and I hope to receive a good answer. Thanks.

Gratefully yours,

Lim Hun Jung

Do you know about Fire Fox.

I don' think so. How about MS Explorer.

ofcause you will know about explorer as an internet surfing tool.

It is true. and firefox is another tool for internet surfing which became famous nowadays

Because of its free policy and open source. Also it doesn't need many computer sources like memories and hard spaces.

But most main reason is protect internet monopoly from M$ (Micro Soft)

In these days, Ms explorer users are more than 96%

(even 4% theother web browsers users are use explorer together)

How do you think about this? Is this due to Explorer's convinience?

No. Because MS are win in web brower competition and monopoly intertet

Here is a big evidence. Download firefox or mozilla and try to conect

cyworld.com  or anyother web page.

Maybe you will see a notice that "there are errors in your web browser please use IE(explorer)

This is not a Fire Fox developer's fault.

Even though there are standard roles to build internet web pages, Ms does not follow this roles.

They make their own roles and spread that specific roles which is only work in Ms Explorer to the world.

think about this one day Ms stop to distribute Ms web browser and they sell the Explorer like a "Ms word" software.

Then, what are you going to do? Are you going to buy expencive web browser to use free opened internet?

Internet isn't a commercial thing for M$. it is opened and we have a right to use it freely.
